Unemployment Rate SoarsCalifornia’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.3 percent in December from 8.4 percent in November and 5.9 percent in December 2007, the state Employment Development Department said Friday.

Jobs in nonfarm industries declined by 78,200 statewide last month. From December 2007 to December 2008, the state lost 257,400 jobs, down 1.7 percent.

The highest local jobless rate was in Riverside County, at 10.4 percent. The county has a labor force of 937,400 with 97,900 unemployed last month.

Los Angeles County has a worker pool of 4,965,000 million, of which 473,500 were unemployed in December, for a jobless rate of 9.5 percent. Orange County’s 6.5 percent unemployment rate reflects the fact that 107,700 of the county’s 1,648,500 workers were unemployed last month.

San Bernadino County had 9.7 percent for December. Of the county’s 909,700 workers, 88,400 were jobless last month.

Statewide in December, 2,300 jobs were added in educational and health services, while a total of 80,500 jobs were lost in 10 categories: natural resources and mining; construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; information; financial activities; professional and business services; leisure and hospitality; other services; and government.

The largest monthly decline was in trade transportation and utilities, which lost 25,400 jobs.

From December 2007 to December 2008, nonfarm payroll decreased by 257,400 jobs, a decline of 1.7 percent.

Natural resources and mining, educational and health services and government added 58,700 jobs for the year. A total of 316,100 jobs were lost from construction; manufacturing; trade transportation and utilities; information; financial activities; professional and business services; leisure and hospitality; and other services for the year.

Construction employment in California showed the largest decline for the year, down 92,600 jobs or 10.8 percent.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a statement Friday expressing his concern about the state's jobless rate.

“Every day I think about the Californians who have lost their jobs during this tough economic time — and that is exactly why I am fighting for aggressive economic stimulus in state budget negotiations,” he said.

“Our increasing unemployment rate makes it clear that the crisis in our nation’s economy that has led to job losses is completely tied to our state budget shortfall. We cannot solve our fiscal problems without working to stimulate our economy, which is why I have continued to push for all four elements needed to put our state on the right track: spending reductions, increasing revenues, making government run more efficiently and stimulating our economy by putting people back to work and helping families stay in their homes. Today’s unfortunate news makes it even more clear that all four elements are necessary immediately,” Schwarzenegger said.
